Biography of Asafa Powell

Asafa Powell, the youngest of six children born to Reverend William and Cislyn Powell, was born on November 23, 1982, in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Initially, he had plans to become a mechanic before seriously pursuing a career in sprinting during his time at Kingston. Asafa represented his school, Charlemont High School, in the inter-school championships. On April 11, 2001, he finished fourth in the 1200m race with a time of 23.07 seconds and a headwind of 1.7m/s.

Early Career

Asafa Powell was a member of the 'Maximising Velocity and Power' track club located at the University of Technology in Kingston, where he trained under the guidance of Stephen Francis. Standing at 1.9m tall and weighing 88kg, Powell possessed explosive speed at the start, which is uncommon for tall runners. His long legs gave him an additional advantage, and his official maximum stride length was recorded at an impressive 2.6m. At the start, Powell placed a large portion of his foot on the ground to maximize friction and generate maximum propulsion. His large quadriceps muscle, responsible for lifting the leg for the next stride, had a four times larger cross-sectional area than an average person's muscle. Additionally, Powell had remarkably stiff tendons. To stretch the tendon in an average person's thigh muscle by 1 cm requires 43kg of muscular force, while Powell required 114kg. However, his most impressive attribute was his technique, which combined extraordinary physical strength with flawless execution.

Record-Breaking Performances

Specializing in the 100m sprint, Powell set a new world record in June 2005 with a time of 9.77 seconds. He continued to improve upon this record, eventually settling at 9.74 seconds in May 2008. Powell consistently broke the 10-second barrier, accomplishing this feat a record-breaking 81 times by October 2012. He set his personal best time of 9.72 seconds during a race in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Olympic and World Championship Performances

Powell participated in the 100m sprint at the Olympic Games in 2004, 2008, and 2012. In his first Olympic appearance, he finished fifth. He achieved the same result in 2008. Despite suffering a groin injury during the 2012 race, he managed to secure an eighth-place finish. Powell earned a gold medal and broke both the world and Olympic records as a member of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team in 2008. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, he won a bronze medal in the 100m and a silver medal in the 4x100m relay. In the same year, he earned two gold medals and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. Powell also achieved success at the World Athletics Final, organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations, winning the competition five times.

Doping Controversy and Personal Tragedies

On July 14, 2013, Powell, along with fellow athlete Sherone Simpson, tested positive for oxilofrine. Powell claimed that he did not knowingly take any prohibited substances and that oxilofrine was present in his permitted supplement, Ephiphany D1. As a result, the Anti-Doping Committee suspended Powell from competition for 14 months. In 2002, tragedy struck Asafa's family when his brother Michael was shot in a taxi in New York. A year later, he lost another brother, Von, to a heart attack during an American football game. In April 2007, Asafa's uncle, Corey Reid, was stabbed in Ewarton and later died in the hospital. Powell is also passionate about cars and an avid car enthusiast.
