The Reason TVD's Nina Dobrev And Paul Wesley Never Dated
If you know anything about what went on behind the scenes of The Vampire Diaries, you'll know that the biggest source of drama came from Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder's three-year relationship.
What some people might not know is there was also drama between Dobrev and her other on-screen love, Paul Wesley. But before you think that there was a love triangle between the three co-stars, just like there was between their characters on the show, think again.
Dobrev and Wesley never even got as far as thinking about dating each other.
Dobrev Never Had The Intention Of Dating Any Of Her Co-Stars
Going into playing Elena Gilbert on TVD, Dobrev had the mindset that she would never date any of her co-stars, so right away, none of her co-stars had a chance. After a while though, as we know, she broke that self-proclaimed rule when she starting hanging out with Somerhalder.
After she started dating Somerhalder, Dobrev explained to Seventeenher reasoning behind her decision to ax the rule.

"The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said 'Nina: Why she wouldn’t date any of her co-stars.' And then cut to two years later…it's funny that I said that, but you know what? It was honestly what I believed at the time. I didn’t want to be dating one of my costars—my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long—which I did for a really, really long time."
Unfortunately for her and Somerhalder, their relationship didn't work out anyway because of another one of Dobrev's rules with herself. The rule that her career would come first before anything else.
They 'Despised' Each Other For The First Five Months Of Filming The Show
In 2019, Dobrev spoke on the "Directionally Challenged" podcast about how her relationship with Wesley started out at the beginning of the show.

"Paul and I didn't get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn't like Paul Wesley," Dobrev said.
"Everyone thought that we had such good chemistry. I realize now that there's a fine line between love and hate and we despised each other so much that it read as love but … We really just didn't get along the first five months of shooting."
When asked about these comments, Wesley agreed with Dobrev that they totally didn't get along. "I think the point that Nina was making, and I'll totally back her up on this, is that we totally clashed [the] first couple years in terms of just getting on each other's nerves."
After A While, They Were Able To Become Friends
All the pair needed though apparently was time to really get to know each other, and after some time, they were able to become really close friends.
"I think sometimes when people work together nonstop, do press nonstop for years and years on end, you're just — you don't appreciate the person that's in front of you. You're like, 'Oh, you know, I'm exhausted and tired.' And I think now, it's such a nice sort of story because we're such good friends now," Wesley said.
"I think it was a cool lesson to learn. It's like the people that kind of maybe you don't get along with in the beginning later surprise you, and I think a lot of my friendships are like that."
Dobrev now sees Wesley as one of her closest friends, and apparently, even with the show being over, they still talk at least once a week and hang out a lot.

"We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine," Dobrev said. "Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most. We're probably the closest. We hang out a lot. We're really good friends. I love his wife. It's so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends."
Despite Their Friendship, Dobrev Was Still Annoyed By The Dating Rumors.
Since the pair had such amazing on-screen chemistry (just like she had with Somerhalder), of course, fans constantly speculated that they were dating. Not only were these rumors spurred on by the fans, but also people on the set as well, and that angered Dobrev.
But as Dobrev and Welsey were fooling fans and making them think that they must be dating, Dobrev was in fact hanging out with Somerhalder all along.
The 'Feud' Was Blown Out Of Proportion
Speaking on another podcast, Dobrev said she thought that the 'feud' was blown out of proportion.
"I have to, first of all, say that the story was blown out of proportion to such a crazy degree," she said on the podcast. "I guess nothing else was happening that week 'cause every outlet picked it up. I felt like I was Brangelina. You know what, you guys? We're not. I don't have the career — clearly nothing else was happening. It blew my mind when that became a thing."
Dobrev said that the reason they didn't get along was because of too much time together, but that it was normal, like a dislike you'd have for a sibling. Now that's not the case.
Instead, the pair can joke about all of it, as Dobrev's social media shows Wesley jokingly pushing her in a pool for saying she 'despised him.'
The pair don't 'despise' each other anymore, none of the cast does for that matter. They are one big happy vampire family.
