Ever heard of Hikaru Nakamura? Born on December 9, 1987, in Hirakata, Japan, Hikaru is the guy who redefined what it means to be a chess prodigy. He moved to the U.S. at the age of two and was introduced to chess by his stepdad, Sunil Weeramantry, a FIDE Master. By age seven, Hikaru was already showing serious promise.

Early Beginnings
Hikaru's chess journey started when he was seven, coached by his stepdad. By 10, he was already turning heads as the youngest American to beat an International Master. Then, at 15, he broke Bobby Fischer's record, becoming the youngest American Grandmaster ever. Talk about a fast track to fame!

Climbing the Ranks
Hikaru's rise to fame continued with his first U.S. Chess Championship win in 2005. He’s claimed this title five times now, cementing his position as a top player in American chess.

In 2009, Hikaru became the World Champion in Chess960 (also known as Fischer Random Chess), and he reclaimed the title in 2022. He’s also been a top contender in the Candidates Tournament, finishing second in 2024.
